I have recently gotten interested in the WW1 Warbirds. There is nothing like them, the majesty of thier flight, the romance, the realism, I could go on and on. Anyway on to the reason for this thread. I have recently purchased a Balsa USA 1/4 Scale Nieuport 11 Kit and thought i would post pictures and technique ideas on this thread hopefully we can get some interest generated in this era of aircraft. I plan to finish it in the colors of Elliot C. Cowdin (i like the colors and the look). Most Aircraft kits have the aieron servos exposed in the bottom of the wing or at least the pushrod and control horn visable. I personally do not like that and will attempt to build a working scale bellcrank to tortion bar aileron control sytem.
I will also address an issue i do not like about this kit. according to the plans the landing gear is mounted to the bottom of the bottom wing itself. so you have to rempve the landing gear in order to remove the lower wing. then where will you reattach the gear for transport? I saw an idea in a thread on RCUniverse. anyway on with the build.

Here are some pics of my building board. I started with a discarded bathroom door and removed the hinges and doorknob. Next step was to purchase some cieling tiles which allow for a streight building surface as well as the ability to poke pins into it and expect them to hold pictures will not displaye here for some reason so you will have to go the the Image gallery/scale airplanes/ nieuport 11 build pics.

I'me back.
after getting the building board settled on two folding card tables ( a little wobbley but they work) I taped the main wing plans to the board. the board is big enough that i was able to "splice" the plans together into one piece. I really can't tell you if this was better or not as this is my first giant scale airplane build. I just needed to turn the board around to do the other panel.
After the plans were taped down. I taped wax paper over them for protection, then started the build

The most critical step during the wing build is getting the main spar STRAIGHT !!!! a bent main spar will mean a bent wing.
The instruction book suggested using a straight edge to get this right. The trick worked great, and i was able to get the spar pinned down straight. Also if you will look at the edge of the building board you will see a black line that runs the length of the board. This is to use as a reference later in the wing construction to get the sweep angle right. I also drew a line perpendicular to that line as a center line This helped with taping the plans to the board.

After the main spar was pinned down i used the wing ribs to get the distance of the aft bottom spar pinned in place. After that it was just a matter of fitting the ribs and glueing them in place. Oh yeah i used that little yellow triangle to get the ribs square to the building board.

howdy all.
Well the left wing panel is almost complete. all it needs is the shear webbing glued in I used the actual rib spacing to measure the length i needed for the shear webs, then used the leading edge coupled with the triangle to get the cut square. most cuts needed a little bit of sanding to get it right but they all have a good tight joint as a result

WOOOHOOOO!!!!! the left main wing panel is DONE!! 1 down and three to go..
